In the USA you cannot Patient or
copyright any analog alphabet design. (Europe you can). In the USA you can Patient or
copyright digital Proprietary information like a (digital font.). If a font is designed for a Client (usually
it will be digitized - and a kerning
program will also be made. and a record of sale will always be available. It is up to the client
to see that no one steels the disk and copies it. Unfortunately it gets stolen. Of course no one would
try to sell a font that was made for a client. Stealing Propriety information
is punishable by jail and fine. But designers have been
known to some how get it and the either use it for a job of their own, or modify it as one
could do with any existing type then call it one they've designed. This goes on all the
time, that's referred to as Piracy. So much has been written
and said about this --- but piracy seems to be now a big business. Confused ? so is
everyone. but the artist suffers at the end.
